The Kansas City Current clinched a convincing 3-1 victory over the Chicago Red Stars at Seat Geek Stadium on Saturday, securing their place in history by finishing the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) regular season with a record-breaking total of 57 goals.

The previous record was set by the North Carolina Courage, who scored 54 goals during the 2019 season.

With a final record of 16 wins, 3 losses, and 7 draws, the Current opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Michelle Cooper found the net with her left foot.

Just three minutes later, Debinha extended the lead, assisted by Vanessa DiBernardo, who achieved her sixth assist of the season.

In the 33rd minute, Nichelle Prince capitalized on a loose ball within the box, netting the Current’s third goal and taking the score to 3-0.

The Red Stars (with a record of 10-14-2) managed to score in the 52nd minute when Ally Schlegel converted a pass from Shea Groom, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome of the match.

With their victory, the Current secured the fourth seed for the upcoming playoffs and will now face the fifth-seeded North Carolina Courage on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the eighth-seeded Red Stars will attempt to upset the top-seeded Orlando Pride on Friday.

In another match, the San Diego Wave triumphed over Racing Louisville with a score of 3-1 at Lynn Family Stadium, even though the game was technically a home match for San Diego.

Due to subpar field conditions at their home venue, the game was relocated to Louisville.

The Wave (6-13-7) quickly took the lead in just the third minute when Jaedyn Shaw’s cross misdirected through the box and ended up in the goal.

María Sánchez, who joined San Diego in a trade from the Houston Dash, scored her first goal for the team with a curling free kick in the 22nd minute, putting them ahead 2-0.

Louisville (7-12-7) reduced the deficit in the 68th minute when Bethany Balcer capitalized on a rebound after Kayla Fischer’s shot hit the post.

However, the Wave sealed their victory in the 76th minute as Savannah McCaskill headed in a cross from Delphine Cascarino, restoring the lead to 3-1.

Neither team will advance to the playoffs, marking the end of their respective seasons.
