CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals made the decision to bench rookie wide receiver Jermaine Burton for their game against Las Vegas, despite expectations that he would play a significant role.
The reasoning behind this move was not clearly explained. Coach Zac Taylor referred to the action as “a necessary step” for the team.
“We need to handle our business in the proper manner, and while it was a tough call to make him inactive, it was indeed the correct one considering the circumstances,” Taylor stated following the Bengals’ 41-24 win.
“He’s someone who I believe will have a promising career here, and we will continue to support him. He has the desire to contribute to our success and aims to operate the right way.”
Burton, 23, was poised for an increased opportunity during the confrontation with the Raiders, particularly with Tee Higgins out due to a quadriceps injury.
In his inaugural season in the NFL, Burton has recorded two catches for 88 yards over seven games. His selection in the third round of the draft had raised questions surrounding his character, yet his recent performance had earned praise from Bengals coaches and fellow players.
Quarterback Joe Burrow mentioned that Burton will receive guidance from the more experienced members of the team.
“We’ll have discussions, similar to those we would have with any young player,” Burrow commented. “We will guide him in any way possible. As he matures, he will begin to see things from a new perspective. He is still in the early stages of his career.”
