FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — In a commanding performance on Saturday, quarterback Ty Pennington led the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks to a resounding 27-6 victory over Weber State. Pennington amassed a total of 285 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, ensuring that his team was never in jeopardy throughout the game.
The action got underway quickly as Pennington showcased his athleticism by running in a remarkable 75-yard touchdown on the first play following the kickoff. This explosive opening set the tone for the Lumberjacks (5-4, 3-2 Big Sky), who built a substantial early lead. Weber State, under quarterback Richie Munoz, immediately struggled, as Munoz’s first play from scrimmage resulted in an interception thrown to DJ VanHook at the Wildcats’ 28-yard line.
Just five plays later, Pennington connected with Tausagafou Ho Ching for a 9-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to two scores. The Wildcats could not shake off the pressure, as a false-start penalty hindered their next drive; Munoz then threw another interception, this time intercepted by Mikale Greer.
Taking advantage of favorable field position, Pennington orchestrated a six-play drive covering 30 yards that culminated with him rushing for a touchdown from the 2-yard line, pushing the lead to 21-0. Throughout the game, Pennington demonstrated his efficiency, completing 18 of 21 passes for 212 yards alongside two touchdown passes, and adding to his impressive tally with 12 carries for 73 yards and two rushing touchdowns. His performance wrapped up when he found Ta’ir Brooks for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 12:25 remaining, although the ensuing extra point attempt was missed.
For Weber State (3-6, 2-3), Munoz managed to throw for 152 yards, but his two interceptions and the team’s inability to convert these opportunities into points ultimately stifled their chances for a comeback.
