Pelicans include CJ McCollum and Herb Jones on expanding injury roster

NEW ORLEANS — On Friday, New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green found himself facing a tough situation as he learned that starting guard CJ McCollum and key defender Herb Jones would be sidelined for several weeks, joining point guard Dejounte Murray on the injury list. Despite the challenges, Green chose to focus on the positives.

“We’re thankful that this isn’t a season-ending situation for them,” Green stated prior to the Pelicans’ game against the Indiana Pacers. “They have injuries that are recoverable. At the same time, this will place a significant demand on the rest of our players.” He emphasized the need to minimize errors, adapt, and push through the tough stretch.

McCollum, who has been averaging 18.8 points over four games this season, is dealing with a right adductor strain, which is anticipated to keep him out for approximately two to three weeks. Jones, on the other hand, is contending with a right shoulder strain coupled with a minor partial rotator cuff tear, possibly sidelining him for two weeks to a month. Both players sustained their injuries during a game against Golden State on Tuesday night.

Murray, viewed as a critical offseason addition, broke his hand late in New Orleans’ season-opening win over Chicago. He managed to contribute 14 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds in that single game before undergoing surgery last week, placing him on the sidelines for an estimated three to five weeks.

The Pelicans also began their season without wing Trey Murphy III, who is nursing a right hamstring strain and is likely to miss one more week. In light of these injuries, shooting guard Jordan Hawkins, the 2023 first-round draft selection from Connecticut, and point guard Jose Alvarado, a Georgia Tech alumnus, will see an increase in playing time. Both players were inserted into the starting lineup during the recent defeat against Golden State, marking the team’s third consecutive loss.

The matchup against the Pacers also saw the debut of rookie Yves Missi, a 7-foot first-round draft pick from Baylor, who started at center for the first time. Despite the injuries, the Pelicans retained two regular starters in their lineup: power forward Zion Williamson and wing Brandon Ingram.

Green underscored the importance of teamwork and persistence during challenging times. “We just need to stick together and keep pushing forward,” he said. “Adjusting to play without our primary players while integrating those who typically fall outside the regular rotation presents its own set of challenges.”

Reflecting on the impact of injuries, Green acknowledged the initial game showcased what the team could achieve with Murray. He explained that the current situation feels reminiscent of past seasons, highlighting the need for adjustments.

While it is easy to feel disheartened given the circumstances, Green remained optimistic, stating, “Life is good, and I’m truly thankful for the chance to lead. Adversity is part of the game, and how we respond to these challenges ultimately prepares us for life beyond basketball.”
