LONDON — Collins Dictionary has announced that “brat,” the title of Charli XCX’s summer album, has been chosen as the Word of the Year for 2024.
This term is described as embodying a “confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.”
The phrase “brat summer” associated with the album has emerged as one of the most discussed words of the year.
Collins noted that beyond its commercial success, the album “brat” has become a significant cultural trend that people around the globe identify with.

Collins Dictionary’s team of lexicographers carefully analyzes a colossal 20-billion-word database to compile an annual list that highlights words reflecting the changing landscape of the English language.
Among other notable entries for 2024 is the term “era,” which refers to a distinct phase in one’s life or career.
This word has gained traction thanks to Taylor Swift’s exceptionally popular Eras tour.
Additional noteworthy mentions in this year’s list include “anti-tourism,” highlighting the growing backlash against mass tourism, “delulu,” which refers to someone who holds unrealistic expectations, and “rawdogging,” describing the experience of taking a long flight without digital devices or distractions.
Collins’ managing director, Alex Beecroft, shared that the list’s prominence of words popularized by generations Z and Alpha demonstrates its unique character.
He articulated that this is the most “brat” version of the Word of the Year list yet.
In contrast, the Word of the Year for 2023 was “AI,” an abbreviation for artificial intelligence.
