Englewood, Colorado – As the 2024 NFL season progresses into November, it is not Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels—the top two picks of the previous draft—capturing the spotlight, but rather the Denver Broncos’ rookie quarterback, Bo Nix. Nix recently earned the title of AFC’s Offensive Rookie of the Month, marking a remarkable turnaround from a challenging September.
Nix’s performance in October has been impressive, leading his team to three decisive victories and securing the Broncos’ best record through the first eight games of the season in eight years. With five wins so far, he has already surpassed the previous record for rookie quarterbacks in franchise history held by John Elway and Drew Lock, who both won four games.
During October, Nix topped all rookie quarterbacks with seven touchdown passes, an impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7-to-1, 870 passing yards, and two rushing touchdowns. His contributions were pivotal in helping the Broncos recover from an 0-2 start, clinching five victories in their last six outings.
After an initial struggle, where Nix threw four interceptions in the opening weeks and did not throw a touchdown pass until Week 4, he has since depicted substantial growth. While he continues to refine his footwork, timing, and throwing technique, his maturity level has exceeded expectations, reinforcing coach Sean Payton’s belief that Nix’s extensive collegiate experience—61 combined starts at Auburn and Oregon—sets him apart from the average rookie quarterback.
Payton noted that Nix, at 24, behaves like a seasoned professional even during practice, ensuring he maintains a strict routine in his preparation. Married and disciplined, Nix demonstrates a commitment to his craft and a mindset that has helped him overcome early setbacks in his professional career.
Nix’s experience in college became an appealing factor for the Broncos, especially when compared to other young quarterbacks, such as Anthony Richardson from the Colts, who began his career with fewer collegiate starts and has struggled with a low completion rate. Payton emphasized that Nix’s strengths include his accuracy, arm talent, and surprisingly effective running ability, which has taken opponents by surprise, adding a new dynamic to the Broncos’ offense.
Despite being recognized for his athleticism, Nix aims to establish himself as an effective passer rather than relying solely on running. He humbly compared his performance to that of Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, suggesting that Jackson possesses a unique talent not easily replicated. Nix anticipates the challenge of facing Jackson, recalling a time when he watched Jackson in high school and was captivated by his electrifying abilities.
Additionally, Nix remains aware of the performances of the other quarterbacks drafted ahead of him, such as Williams, Daniels, Drake Maye, and others. He embraces the competition, viewing it as an opportunity for shared growth and development among peers.
Ultimately, Nix feels content with where he landed in the draft. He appreciates that joining the Broncos has been a beneficial match for both himself and the team, expressing his gratitude for the chance to learn under seasoned coach Payton as they continue their journey together throughout the season.
