SALT LAKE CITY — In an impressive performance, Mikhail Sergachev contributed a goal and two assists as the Utah Hockey Club triumphed over the Calgary Flames with a score of 5-1 on Wednesday night. Connor Ingram was a standout in goal, making 30 saves while his teammates managed to break a four-game losing streak.
Additional goals came from Alexander Kerfoot, Barrett Hayton, Maveric Lamoureux, and Clayton Keller, solidifying Utah’s command throughout the match. Anthony Mantha was the lone scorer for the Flames, who now find themselves on a four-game losing streak as well, with goaltender Dustin Wolf stopping 23 shots.
Utah set the tone early, with both Kerfoot and Hayton finding the net from long-range efforts, quickly establishing a two-goal advantage in the first period. Mantha attempted to shift the momentum back for Calgary with a goal at the start of the second period, but Lamoureux responded almost immediately. He capitalized on a turnover, launching a powerful slap shot from 60 feet just 17 seconds after Mantha’s goal.
Things got even better for Utah later in the second period when Sergachev found the back of the net during a 5-on-3 power play, widening the lead to three goals. In the final period, Keller secured the game’s fifth goal with another power play score.
Takeaways from the game highlight that Calgary came out with opportunities to establish control but failed to convert on two power plays in the first period, ultimately contributing to their struggle as Utah’s offense gained momentum. For Utah, they mirrored their previous matchup against San Jose, taking a 4-1 lead into the third period; however, this time their defense maintained its composure without any late-game lapses.
A significant moment in the match was when the Flames narrowed the gap with Mantha’s goal at the onset of the second period. Lamoureux’s ensuing goal, which marked his first career NHL goal, quickly restored Utah’s two-goal lead and helped shift the game’s momentum.
A notable milestone occurred as Calgary forward Mikael Backlund played his 1000th NHL game, becoming only the second player in franchise history to reach this mark, joining Jarome Iginla.
Looking ahead, the Flames will face the New Jersey Devils on Friday, while Utah is set to take on the Vegas Golden Knights as they embark on a four-game road trip starting Saturday.
