LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Alisher Usmanov, a prominent Russian billionaire, is poised for a potential return as the president of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), following his nomination for a new term by a significant number of the organization’s members.
Usmanov, recognized for his substantial financial contributions to fencing over the past twenty years, last held the presidency in 2021. However, he stepped back from his role in March 2022 after being sanctioned by the European Union in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Emmanuel Katsiadakis, a Greek official, has taken on the responsibilities of interim president during Usmanov’s absence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Usmanov did not clarify whether he plans to take over the daily operations of the FIE again. Nonetheless, he announced that 103 out of the 156 national federations affiliated with the FIE have supported his nomination, which he interpreted as “a sign of trust and recognition of the achievements of international fencing over the last 15 years.”
Usmanov expressed his ongoing dedication to the sport, stating, “As before, I remain committed to my favorite sport and I wish the international fencing community further success and new sporting victories ahead.” He reiterated his position from earlier, when he characterized the sanctions imposed on him as “unfair” and founded on what he described as “false and defamatory allegations.” He also declared his intention to suspend his presidential functions “until justice is restored.”
The FIE congress is scheduled to take place on November 30 in Uzbekistan, which is Usmanov’s birthplace, potentially marking a significant moment for both the federation and Usmanov himself.
