DOVER, N.H. — An individual from New Hampshire has been indicted following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the tragic death of the commander of the state’s Air National Guard, as reported by authorities.
Paul Clement, an 81-year-old resident of Rochester, was indicted on October 17 by a grand jury in Strafford County. The charges against him include negligent homicide and failure to remain at the scene of an accident that resulted in death or injury. He is currently out on personal recognizance and has a scheduled court appearance on November 5.
Attempts to reach his attorney, Andrew Cotrupi, for comments were made, but no response had been received as of Monday.
The incident occurred on July 8 when Brig. Gen. John Pogorek was in the process of securing a load on his trailer along the roadside in Rochester. According to police reports, Pogorek was struck by an SUV that did not stop after the collision. Investigators later found the vehicle linked to the incident and connected it to Clement. He was arrested in August and, through court documents, disclosed to police that he had been consuming alcohol prior to the accident.
Brig. Gen. Pogorek, who was 57 years old at the time of his death, had a distinguished military career. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1989 and became a part of the New Hampshire Air National Guard in 1999. In 2022, he was appointed as the commander, where he had been serving as a principal adviser to Governor Chris Sununu, as well as to the state’s adjutant general. He was also responsible for overseeing all operations at the Pease Air National Guard Base.
