PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Mekhi Hagens showcased an impressive performance by throwing for two touchdowns and running for another pair, guiding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 35-21 win against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.

The Lions closed out the contest with a strong finish, scoring the last 21 points, which included a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Hagens as well as touchdown passes of 33 yards to JaVonnie Gibson and 30 yards to Daemon Dawkins.

Hagens had an efficient game, completing 13 of 16 passes for a total of 204 yards. On the other side, Ty’Jarian Williams from Mississippi Valley State managed 15 completions out of 21 attempts for 159 yards. Both quarterbacks not only excelled in the air but also served as their teams’ leading rushers, with Williams accumulating 124 yards and Hagens following closely behind with 78 yards.

Gibson contributed significantly to the Lions’ offense, earning 102 receiving yards on seven receptions. In the first half, Hagens’ short rushing touchdowns propelled Arkansas-Pine Bluff to leads of 7-0 and 14-7, although Williams responded with a 4-yard rushing touchdown that brought the score to a 14-14 tie at halftime.

In the third quarter, DePhabian Fant scored on an 8-yard touchdown run, giving the Delta Devils a 21-14 advantage. However, Hagens quickly retaliated, completing a second rushing touchdown followed by his two touchdown passes, ensuring a solid victory for the Lions (3-5, 2-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference).
