OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — In an exciting college football matchup, Ethan Greenwood showcased his versatility, throwing for two touchdowns and also catching a 26-yard pass from backup quarterback Luca Stanzani, propelling Long Island University (LIU) to a narrow 24-21 victory over Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) on Saturday.
Greenwood was unmarked when he made a crucial catch from Stanzani’s pass over the middle, putting LIU ahead with eight minutes to go in the game.
The game took a dramatic turn in the final minutes when CCSU’s Michael Plaskon fumbled a punt but managed to recover it at the 11-yard line. The Blue Devils earned two first downs, inching closer to midfield with just 43 seconds left in the game.
However, CCSU’s hopes for a last-minute field goal were dashed. On a pivotal fourth-and-four with 14 seconds remaining, Brady Olson connected with Cortaz Williams out of the backfield, but Williams stepped out of bounds just shy of the first down marker, resulting in a turnover on downs.
With this win, LIU improved its record to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference, marking their second victory in the last three games after starting the season with six consecutive losses.
Greenwood’s performance included completing 10 out of 14 passes and rushing for 66 yards on 18 carries. For CCSU, Olson threw for 185 yards, completing 20 of his 34 attempts while also leading his team in rushing with 46 yards and one touchdown. The defeat puts CCSU’s record at 3-5 for the season, with a conference mark of 2-1.
