BOULDER, Colorado — This week, Colorado defensive lineman Nikhil Webb Walker shared with his teammates that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma and will commence chemotherapy treatment.
Walker revealed this news during a team meeting, which was recorded by “Well Off Media,” a platform that follows the Colorado football program, and shared online recently.
The sophomore, originally from Jamaica, recounted how he found a bump on his chest and initially waited about a week, hoping it would subside on its own. After consulting the trainers, he underwent a biopsy that confirmed the lymphoma diagnosis. In his video message, he mentioned that doctors assured him the condition is “very treatable.”
“I’ve been going through this, and that’s why many of you haven’t seen me lately,” Walker said. He noted that he transferred to Colorado from New Mexico State earlier this offseason. “I’ve tried to keep this to myself because I didn’t want to distract the team. My focus is on how you all perform, aiming for conference championships, bowl games, and even national titles. That’s why I’ve kept it private.”
He expressed gratitude to his teammates, stating, “Just being here has really helped me manage this situation. Thank you all for making this easier, despite how tough it is.”
In response, Coach Deion Sanders comforted him, stating, “First of all, you’re not a distraction. You’re a blessing to us. You remind us of what life truly is. … What you’re facing is serious, and your strength in handling it is commendable. We love and appreciate you, and we will support you through this.”
Sanders embraced Walker as the team applauded in support.
The Buffaloes, currently holding a record of 5-2, are close to securing bowl eligibility. They are scheduled to play against the Cincinnati Bearcats this Saturday night at Folsom Field.
