ASHBURN, Va. — Jayden Daniels’ availability for the Washington Commanders’ game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday remains uncertain due to a rib injury. His status will be determined at game time, following his limited participation in Friday’s practice. This potential matchup is particularly intriguing as it could see him going head-to-head with fellow rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, both of whom were selected high in the 2024 NFL draft.

Head Coach Dan Quinn provided an update, noting that the reigning Heisman Trophy winner had been sidelined earlier in the week on Wednesday and Thursday. Daniels suffered the injury during a dominant 40-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers last weekend, which has raised concerns about how he will perform if he takes to the field.

In the first five games of the season, Daniels has made a significant impact, accumulating 1,410 passing yards, 372 rushing yards, and contributing to 10 total touchdowns. However, the Commanders are wary of risking his health and jeopardizing his natural playing style if he is not fully fit.

“You want him to be able to play at his best, but we also need to be cautious and protect him because he has a tendency to throw himself into the game,” said offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. “He is an incredibly competitive player, and he thrives under pressure. It’s crucial for us as a team to ensure he’s completely ready to go and can operate the way he knows how before making a final decision on his involvement.”

If Daniels is unable to play, veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota will take the lead. Kingsbury acknowledged the preparation that both quarterbacks have been undergoing in anticipation of the game. Mariota stepped in last week and executed a strong performance, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns against the Panthers. He has been gearing up for the possibility of a starting role.

“It’s quite challenging when the starting quarterback is not available, so everyone needs to elevate their performance,” Mariota remarked earlier in the week. “This week, my focus has been on getting ready in case my number is called.”
