LOS ANGELES — Major League Baseball has announced that Mark Carlson will serve as the crew chief for the upcoming World Series, while fellow umpires Andy Fletcher, Mark Ripperger, and Carlos Torres will be making their World Series debuts.
Torres, a 46-year-old who began his MLB career in 2015, is scheduled to officiate the opening game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees at Dodger Stadium. The announcement was made on Thursday.
Carlson, aged 55, made his major league debut in 1999 and this marks his third time officiating in the World Series, having previously participated in the series in 2015 and 2020. He will take the position of first base umpire for Game 1, alongside Doug Eddings at second base, Ripperger at third base, Chad Fairchild handling left field, and Todd Tichenor in right field. Fletcher will serve as the reserve umpire.
This series marks a significant milestone for several umpires, including the 56-year-old Eddings, who will be officiating his second World Series after appearing in 2019. Fairchild, aged 53, is returning for his second after 2018, and 47-year-old Tichenor is back for a second time following his 2020 appearance. Eddings made his major league debut in 1998, while Fairchild began in 2004 and Tichenor in 2007.
Fletcher will be responsible for calling balls and strikes in Game 2, followed by Carlson, Eddings, Ripperger, Fairchild, and Tichenor continuing this role through Game 7. For the second game, Tichenor will take over as the crew chief with Carlson acting as reserve. Fletcher, 57, began his career in 1999 while Ripperger, 44, entered the league in 2010.
During the season, Ripperger posted a 94.8% accuracy rate as an umpire, according to statistics from umpscorecards.com. Other accuracy rates included Tichenor at 94.4%, Torres at 94.2%, Fairchild at 93.8%, Carlson at 93.6%, Eddings at 93.4%, and Fletcher at 93.1%.
Cory Blaser and James Hoye will oversee the video review operations at the commissioner’s office in New York. Notably, all nine umpires selected for the World Series have already worked during the Division Series this year.
