COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Retired General Martin E. Dempsey has been reappointed as the chair of USA Basketball, a position he will hold through the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. During this event, the U.S. women’s team will strive for its ninth consecutive gold medal, while the men’s team aims for its sixth straight championship.

Dempsey, who dedicated 41 years to military service before retiring in 2015, has been at the helm of USA Basketball since 2016. His re-election was officially announced by the organization on Wednesday.

Previously, Dempsey held prominent roles as the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Barack Obama. Expressing his enthusiasm about continuing his role, Dempsey stated, “It has been a real honor to represent our country with USA Basketball over the last eight years, and I’m looking forward to continuing to serve with the Board of Directors through the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

Dempsey holds one of 15 positions on the USA Basketball Board of Directors and will remain involved throughout the 2028 Olympic cycle. Several notable figures are also returning to the board, including Mark Tatum, the NBA’s deputy commissioner, NCAA’s Dan Gavitt, WNBA’s Bethany Donaphin, and Olympic gold medalists Seimone Augustus and Harrison Barnes.

New members joining the board include Joe Dumars, the NBA executive vice president, Nina King, the athletic director at Duke, Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, and Lynn Holzman, vice president of women’s basketball at NCAA. Additionally, Christopher Parker, President and CEO of NJCAA, along with Olympic champions Sylvia Fowles, Lindsay Whalen, and Shareef Abdur-Raheem, will also be part of the board.

USA Basketball continues to hold the top ranking in all five of FIBA’s world categories, which include men’s, women’s, combined, boys, and girls. The organization’s ongoing success and leadership aim to bolster their efforts in various basketball arenas as they prepare for the significant challenges that lie ahead in the coming years.
