NYON, Switzerland — Azerbaijan and Spain have expressed their eagerness to host the men’s Champions League final in 2027, following UEFA’s decision to reopen the bidding for this prestigious event.
The final is being considered for either Baku’s Olympic Stadium or the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, both of which have been highlighted as potential venues by UEFA on Wednesday.
Proposals from both bidders are due by March 19, with UEFA planning to announce the chosen host for the final in May.
The decision to seek a new location for the final came after UEFA’s executive committee opted against assigning it to the iconic San Siro stadium in Milan.
Milan was granted additional time to assure UEFA that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would be available despite ongoing renovations scheduled between the ceremonies for the 2026 Winter Olympics and games for the 2032 European Championship.
Unfortunately, the city was unable to provide the necessary assurances.
Baku previously hosted matches during the European Championship in 2021 and was the venue for the Europa League final in 2019, featuring a match between Chelsea and Arsenal.
The Metropolitano Stadium has also welcomed the Champions League final in the past, specifically in 2019 when Liverpool triumphed over Tottenham with a score of 2-0.
In addition, UEFA revealed on Wednesday that there are four contenders interested in hosting the Women’s Champions League final in 2027.
These bidders include Poland, represented by Warsaw; Spain, with Barcelona; Switzerland, featuring Basel; and Wales, providing Cardiff.
