ATLANTA — The status of Georgia Tech’s quarterback Haynes King for the upcoming game against Virginia Tech on Saturday remains unclear, according to coach Brent Key.
King missed last Saturday’s game, a 31-13 defeat to No. 12 Notre Dame, due to what appeared to be a right shoulder injury. Despite Key initially describing King’s situation as day to day, he has yet to make a definitive call on whether King will play. During the last game, King was not dressed, suggesting he is not close to returning.

Key was firm in disputing claims that King has already been ruled out for the match against Virginia Tech. “Haynes is still day to day,” he stated emphatically. “There’s been zero call made on that, zero. OK. He’s day to day. Are we preparing the other guys to play? Yes. Have we ruled him out? No. You heard it from the horse’s mouth right there.”

Zach Pyron took over as the starting quarterback, marking his first start since his 2022 freshman season. In his debut against Notre Dame, Pyron started strong by completing his first nine passes. Over the course of the game, he finished with 20 completions on 36 attempts, totaling 269 yards, throwing for one touchdown and two interceptions.

Key expressed pride in Pyron’s performance, acknowledging the challenges he faced during the game. “I was very proud of him for the way he went and performed,” he said. “And, you know, that’s not saying that all 72 plays were perfect. I’m not saying that. … A few plays I might take back with him but you learn from those mistakes and move on this week.”

King’s abilities as a dual-threat quarterback, capable both as a passer and a runner, have been crucial for the Yellow Jackets as they currently maintain a record of 5-3 and are 3-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
