SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deebo Samuel, the standout wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for pneumonia.
According to an insider familiar with the situation, Samuel was released on Tuesday following a visit to the hospital that began on Sunday night after the 49ers faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs. This information was shared on the condition of anonymity since the team had not issued a public statement regarding Samuel’s condition.
Prior to the game against the Chiefs, Samuel reported feeling unwell that Sunday morning but made an attempt to participate. Unfortunately, he only managed to play four snaps before exiting the game. Medical evaluation revealed fluid in his lungs, leading to a necessary hospitalization for pneumonia symptoms.
The 49ers are scheduled to return to practice on Wednesday ahead of their match against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned on Monday that he is unsure if Samuel will be fit to play in the upcoming game.
The team’s receiving corps is already facing challenges, particularly with the recent loss of Brandon Aiyuk, who sustained a torn right ACL and MCL during the game and is expected to miss the entire season. Additionally, Jauan Jennings, the third receiver, did not participate in the last matchup due to a hip injury, creating uncertainty around his availability this week. Consequently, the active roster now includes rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, alongside underutilized veterans Chris Conley and Ronnie Bell as the only remaining healthy receiving options.
Samuel’s presence is crucial to the 49ers’ offensive strategy, given his multifaceted role as both a receiver and a runner. This season, he has recorded 20 receptions totaling 335 yards, in addition to 51 rushing yards. He has already scored touchdowns through both passing and running plays and notably holds the distinction of being the only wide receiver in NFL history to achieve at least 20 touchdown receptions and 20 rushing touchdowns throughout a career.
