Sung Kang sought golfing opportunities and discovered options across 3 tours in 18 nations: An Overview

Sung Kang was unable to secure another full year on the PGA Tour, prompting him to search for opportunities beyond his home circuit. His travels took him to locations such as the Bahamas, Bahrain, and Argentina, while also reaching as far as Denmark. His journey included playing at sea level, as well as in the breathtaking Alps.

As Kang spoke on Tuesday from South Korea, the 18th country he has visited this year, he shared an interesting fact from his travels. “Singapore to Houston is really far,” he remarked, battling the jet lag from a recent 6,400-mile flight from Spain’s Andalucia Masters.

Kang recalled a particular trip during late March when he missed the cut at the Singapore Classic and promptly flew to Texas for a Monday qualifier at the Houston Open, where he shot a 67 to qualify but later missed the cut in the tournament.

His next destination was Savannah, Georgia, for a Korn Ferry Tour event, as Kang has logged nearly 100,000 miles in air travel this year alone. At 37 years old, he undertook these extensive journeys from his base in Dallas, driven by the desire to keep competing and to revive his game, all while aiming to regain full status on the PGA Tour.

Playing in the Genesis Championship this week in South Korea marks his 33rd event of the season, alongside 14 appearances on the European Tour, 13 on the Korn Ferry Tour, and six on the PGA Tour, whether through qualifiers or as a former champion after winning the Byron Nelson in 2019.

Additionally, his schedule included qualifying for the U.S. Open, which made for a more straightforward travel plan as he played a Korn Ferry event in South Carolina the week before heading to North Carolina’s Pinehurst No. 2.
