STOCKHOLM — A significant soccer derby in Stockholm, which held implications for the title race in the Swedish league, faced disruption when Djurgarden fans launched fireworks onto the pitch during the second half of the match on Sunday. The encounter, featuring Hammarby against Djurgarden, has been postponed until Monday afternoon, but the match will be played without any spectators due to safety concerns raised by the police.
Hammarby was positioned second in the league standings and held a 2-0 lead at the time of the suspension. A draw in this match would have awarded the league title to their rival Malmo, who would have secured the championship with three games remaining. Notably, Djurgarden was level on points with Hammarby, meaning a victory for either team could still provide a chance to surpass Malmo in the standings.
With only 15 minutes left in the game, Djurgarden supporters ignited several pyrotechnics, prompting officials to remove the players from the field for approximately 50 minutes. After deliberation, it became clear that the match could not be safely resumed in front of the fans. Although some supporters lingered in the stands, the decision was ultimately made to conclude the match on the following day instead.
