SANTA MONICA, Calif. — A gunman, believed to be responsible for wounding a colleague in a shooting incident at Santa Monica College, reportedly took his own life during a confrontation with law enforcement, according to officials.

The victim, who serves as a custodial operations manager, remains in critical condition following the shooting that occurred late Monday at the college’s Center for Media and Design. Police in Santa Monica provided an update on the situation on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old shooter fled the scene after the assault, which college authorities described as an incident of workplace violence. Law enforcement intercepted his vehicle near Hawthorne, located south of Santa Monica. When he refused to comply with commands to surrender, he was subsequently found deceased inside the car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the police statement.

The statement further noted, “The investigation is still ongoing, and detectives are actively working to piece together the complete timeline leading to this tragic occurrence. There are currently no other suspects identified, and the public is not in any further danger.”

In previous years, the suspect had encounters with the law, including an arrest in 2011 for attempted murder and another in 2019 for alleged assault with a deadly weapon. However, police indicated that his only convictions were for minor property offenses.

Following the incident, the community college, which serves around 30,000 students across its various campuses in the coastal city, reopened on Wednesday after being closed on Tuesday as a precautionary measure during the investigation.
