KATHMANDU, Nepal — The remains of five Russian climbers who lost their lives on one of the tallest mountains in the world were successfully retrieved from Mount Dhaulagiri on Wednesday and transported to Kathmandu.
Rescue helicopters managed to collect the bodies from the base camp and subsequently flew them to the city. Following their arrival at the airport in Kathmandu, the remains were taken to the morgue at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for further examination.
These climbers were attempting to conquer the 8,167-meter (26,788-foot) summit of Mount Dhaulagiri during the autumn climbing season, which is known for being less crowded than the spring. Reports indicated that the climbers had been unaccounted for since October 6, prompting a rescue mission that ultimately located their bodies two days later.
Challenging weather conditions and the remote location of the bodies complicated the rescue efforts, making the retrieval process arduous for the team involved. It was confirmed that two members of the group successfully reached the summit, while the remaining three had turned back before arriving at the peak, after the team at base camp lost communication with them.
The autumn climbing season, which commenced last month, offers climbers a chance to ascend the peaks with lesser crowds and reduced permit costs in comparison to the popular climbing season in spring.
The climbers who tragically lost their lives have been identified as Alexander Dusheiko, Oleg Kruglov, Vladimir Chistikov, Mikhail Nosenko, and Dmitry Shpilevoy.
