ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia head coach Kirby Smart addressed the media on Monday, explaining his interactions with Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren during Saturday night’s game. This encounter occurred as Georgia was securing a 41-31 victory, where Van Buren made his way to the Georgia sideline in the game’s closing moments. Smart was hurrying towards defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann when he inadvertently bumped into the quarterback, prompting questions about the incident.

After the game, Smart stated he was unaware of the contact. However, upon reviewing the situation, he decided it was important to reach out to Van Buren and coach Jeff Lebby to clarify his intentions. Smart later mentioned, “I didn’t even realize that I had run into him,” emphasizing that he had no negative motives regarding their meeting. Smart communicated with Lebby shortly after the game, and they discussed the quarterback’s demeanor, with Lebby indicating that Van Buren was handling the situation well. Smart also connected with Van Buren the following day, reiterating that he meant no harm.

Looking ahead, Georgia will face No. 1 ranked Texas this coming Saturday. Following the encounter, Van Buren remarked that he wasn’t entirely sure of what transpired on the sidelines during the game. “I really wasn’t sure what that was but I was just trying to play my game,” he shared, noting that he didn’t notice Smart during the moment.

Making just his second start, Van Buren showcased his abilities by throwing for 306 yards and three touchdowns, significantly contributing to Mississippi State’s comeback from a deficit of 34-10. The effort from the Bulldogs had Smart active on the sidelines, emphasizing the chaotic atmosphere during such moments. “If you’ve ever been on the sideline during a game, it’s pandemonium,” said Smart. He explained the urgency of changing personnel quickly and noted, “we were bad off in a bad personnel grouping.”

In their conversation, Smart praised Van Buren’s talents, stating, “I actually reached out to the kid and he was great.” Smart acknowledged Van Buren as a promising player, complimenting how he improved as the game progressed against their defense. With anticipation building for the upcoming match against Texas, both teams will be looking to solidify their standings.
