EDMONTON, Alberta — In a thrilling matchup, Rasmus Andersson shined with one goal and two assists, leading the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, who are still searching for their first win of the season. The Flames are now boasting an undefeated record of 3-0-0, while the Oilers are struggling at 0-3-0 following a disappointing season start. Calgary’s Dan Vladar was impressive in net, stopping 24 shots throughout the game.

In addition to Andersson’s contributions, the Flames also received goals from Anthony Mantha, Justin Kirkland, and Connor Zary. Conversely, Edmonton’s lone goal came from Jeff Skinner, who scored amidst a tough start for the Oilers. Despite rebounding last season from a rocky beginning, the Oilers are facing difficulties this time around, having been outscored 15-3 in their first three home games.

For Calgary, a significant moment came when Anthony Mantha scored his 300th point in the NHL, which helped the Flames surge ahead 2-1 during the third period. He showcased quick thinking by gathering a rebound in tight space and elevating it over the Oilers’ goaltender, Skinner, marking his second goal this season.

The Oilers did find some solace in their captain Connor McDavid, who assisted on Skinner’s first-period goal. This marked the 15th time McDavid has contributed to a player’s inaugural goal, placing him just behind Wayne Gretzky’s franchise record for assists on first goals. With two disallowed goals due to goaltender interference and offside calls, the Oilers’ frustrations continued to mount as they sought to turn the tide in their favor.

In terms of special teams, Edmonton, struggling with discipline early in the season, fell short by allowing a total of five power-play goals in their first two games. However, they managed to contain Calgary’s opportunities, as the Flames went 0 for 3 on the power play. Last year, the Oilers excelled defensively during the playoffs, yielding only four power-play goals in 25 games.

Looking ahead, the Flames are set to host the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, while the Oilers are prepared to face off against the Philadelphia Flyers, hoping to finally get onto the win column.
