SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have been hit with a $100,000 fine after one of their inactive players became involved in a sideline altercation during a recent game.
The incident in question took place in the third quarter of the 49ers’ matchup against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday. San Francisco cornerback Charvarius Ward was engaged with Arizona tight end Trey McBride when a play concluded. McBride’s actions pushed Ward into the 49ers’ bench area, prompting Ward to seize McBride’s face mask in response.
Inactive player Dre Greenlaw, who is currently on the physically unable to perform list, came into the fray and forcefully pushed McBride away from Ward. Although there were no penalties issued during the game for this skirmish, all three players received fines the following Saturday. McBride was fined $9,545 for unnecessary roughness, while Ward faced an $11,255 fine for his face mask infraction, and Greenlaw was penalized $14,069 for unnecessary roughness as well.
The 49ers have been penalized as a team for breaching a league rule that prohibits inactive players from engaging in unnecessary contact with opponents during games.
