In Boise, Idaho, Ashton Jeanty put on an impressive performance, rushing for 186 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the first half alone. This feat made Jeanty only the eighth FBS running back since 1996 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in just five games, a list that includes notable names like Ricky Williams and Leonard Fournette. Jeanty’s stellar performance, combined with Maddux Madsen’s 256 passing yards and three touchdowns, led No. 21 Boise State to a convincing 62-30 victory over Utah State in the Mountain West opener for both teams.

Boise State extended its winning streak against Utah State to eight games, dominating the first half with a commanding 49-17 lead. Despite sitting out the second half in the blowout, Jeanty’s impact was evident from the beginning as he dashed through defenders on Boise State’s first play for a 63-yard touchdown. He later added a 75-yard scoring run, showcasing his speed and power.

Utah State, now with a 1-4 record, suffered its third loss of the season to a ranked opponent, following defeats against Southern California and Utah in previous weeks. Jalen Royals of Utah State had a standout game with a career-high 211 receiving yards, including two touchdowns, while Spencer Petras achieved a career-high 351 passing yards and three touchdown passes.

Boise State’s performance highlighted a balanced offensive strategy, amassing 303 passing yards and 296 rushing yards against Utah State. However, concerns lingered over the Broncos’ defense, which has displayed vulnerabilities at times and may need to strengthen against tougher opponents remaining on their schedule to secure a spot in the playoffs in December. On the other hand, Utah State is nearing the end of a challenging start to the season, with a matchup against UNLV ahead. The experience gained from facing strong opponents early on should benefit the Aggies as they transition to a less demanding schedule in mid-October.

Looking ahead, Boise State is set to face Hawaii next Saturday, while Utah State will host UNLV on Friday night. The game promises to be an interesting showdown as both teams aim to build on their performances and secure victories moving forward.
