In a thrilling American Athletic Conference battle, Charlotte secured a narrow 21-20 victory over Rice on Saturday thanks to Hahsaun Wilson’s 1-yard rushing touchdown with just 47 seconds remaining in the game.
The game saw Deshawn Purdie making a significant impact by throwing two long touchdown passes to O’Mega Blake in the third quarter, propelling Charlotte to a 14-10 lead after three quarters. However, Rice fought back with E.J. Warner’s 41-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Mojarro and Enock Gota’s 25-yard field goal, putting them ahead at 20-14 with 6:42 left in the game.
Purdie’s pivotal 66-yard connection with Blake on Charlotte’s game-winning drive set the stage for the late drama. Facing a crucial fourth down situation, an untimely pass interference penalty on Rice granted Charlotte a new opportunity. Hitting Colin Weber for a 5-yard gain, Purdie eventually set up Wilson’s game-tying touchdown. Stephan Rusnak’s successful extra point then secured the lead for Charlotte.
In a frantic final minute, Warner led Rice down the field, showcasing composure under pressure. However, a missed 40-yard field goal attempt by Gota as time expired dashed Rice’s hopes of a comeback victory.
Purdie completed 10 of 15 passes for 183 yards, with five completions to Blake for 153 yards and two crucial touchdowns, guiding Charlotte to their second win of the season. On the other side, Warner’s 21 of 39 passing for 254 yards and two touchdowns led the charge for Rice, supported by Dean Connors’ 121 rushing yards and solid receiving performances from Matt Sykes and Elijah Mojarro.
The game showcased the competitive nature of both teams as they battled fiercely till the final whistle, providing an entertaining spectacle for college football fans.
