The Chicago Sky has made the decision to part ways with coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season, as reported by sources on Thursday. Weatherspoon, a Naismith Hall of Famer, was relieved of her coaching duties following the team’s disappointing 13-27 record this season, which led to them missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018 despite the drafting of promising rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.
The Sky, who have seen a revolving door of coaches since their WNBA championship win in 2021, are now tasked with finding their fourth head coach in just a few years. Weatherspoon’s departure could have an impact on the future of standout rookie Angel Reese, who had been vocal in her support of the now-former coach, expressing her admiration for Weatherspoon on social media.
Reese, a record-breaking rebounder and double-double machine during her rookie season, was on track to set more league records before being sidelined by a wrist injury towards the end of the season. Despite the team’s struggles, Reese’s individual accomplishments and her connection with Weatherspoon, who previously coached her in college, made her a standout player in the league.
Weatherspoon, who had a successful playing career with the New York Liberty before transitioning into coaching with the WNBA and NBA, was brought in by the Sky in 2023 to lead the team. However, following a disappointing season, the organization has decided to make a change at the coaching position.
The Sky, under new general manager Jeff Pagliocca’s leadership and with the acquisitions of top draft picks like Cardoso and Reese, had high hopes for the season but fell short of expectations. The team now faces a period of transition as they search for a new coach to lead them back to playoff contention.
