Brashard Smith rushed for three touchdowns and 127 yards, contributing to SMU’s 66-42 victory over TCU. The game featured three non-offensive touchdowns for SMU, a first in 12 years. TCU’s former coach, Sonny Dykes, was ejected after two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties early in the second half.
SMU, part of the ACC, scored 17 points in the final 1:28 of the first half, securing a 41-21 lead, the most points scored in a half by the Mustangs in the 104-game series. The team’s quick scoring burst included Ahmaad Moses’ 69-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Mustangs swiftly took a 17-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the game, with Brandon Crossley and Roderick Daniels Jr. each scoring non-offensive touchdowns. This game marked the highest combined score with 66 points in a series that currently has no future matchups scheduled.
TCU’s Josh Hoover threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns but also had four turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumbles. Smith, in addition to his rushing touchdowns, also caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Jennings, who started ahead of Preston Stone.
TCU’s Dykes had secured victory in the last four games against SMU. The Horned Frogs had previously won the last two matchups. SMU’s defense forced five turnovers in the game, marking three consecutive games with at least three takeaways. Collin Rogers made field goals from 51, 49, and 45 yards.
TCU will play at Kansas next, while SMU will face Florida State in their ACC opener.
