The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced its decision not to endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for the upcoming presidential election. The union, representing 1.3 million members, stated that neither candidate had demonstrated enough support for the interests of working people over big businesses.
Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien expressed disappointment that neither Harris nor Trump made substantial commitments to prioritize the union’s concerns, including refraining from intervening in union campaigns or key Teamsters industries and respecting members’ right to strike.
Although Vice President Harris had previously engaged with organized labor and emphasized her support for the middle class, the Teamsters found that internal polling favored Trump over Harris. Trump, on the other hand, also met with a panel of Teamsters and even had O’Brien speak at the Republican National Convention, where O’Brien criticized corporate greed.
The decision not to endorse either candidate by the Teamsters comes just a few weeks before the Nov. 5 election, making it a late move compared to other major unions like the AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers, which have chosen to endorse Harris.
