Postponement of America’s Cup races after lightning struck near yacht in the US

The America’s Cup organizers have canceled Wednesday’s races due to stormy weather in Barcelona, Spain, a day after lightning struck near a yacht. The decision was made by the race committee as storms gathered over the Mediterranean coast and brought more lightning and rain to the area. This follows the cancellation of a race on Tuesday when lightning struck close to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s boat, prompting organizers to call off the race against Team Emirates New Zealand.

Both boats quickly returned to their bases in Barcelona’s old port following the incident. The competition’s initial stage will eliminate the yacht with the lowest score by Sunday. Currently, Luna Rossa is leading with a 4-0 record, followed by INEOS Britannia at 3-1, NYYC American Magic at 2-2, and Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Orient Express Racing Team at 1-4.

The remaining four boats will compete in two-round playoffs to determine the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, who will then face New Zealand in the America’s Cup match. As a result of the stormy weather, the races have been postponed to an unspecified future date.
