‘Deadpool’ remains at the top as ‘Reagan’ surpasses predictions during slow Labor Day weekend

Just like in the movies, Deadpool and Wolverine continue to dominate the box office. Marvel’s blockbuster hit, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” maintained its top spot for the second consecutive weekend, bringing in $15.2 million domestically from Friday through Sunday. The film is on track to surpass the $600 million mark in the domestic market after the Labor Day holiday on Monday, solidifying its position as one of only 16 movies to achieve this milestone.

A new contender, “Reagan,” a biopic featuring Dennis Quaid as the 40th U.S. president, entered the scene with a decent performance, collecting $7.4 million over the weekend and an estimated total of $9.2 million including Monday’s projections. Despite receiving positive feedback from audiences, with an A CinemaScore and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics were less impressed, giving it a 19% rating.

Meanwhile, “Alien: Romulus” held onto the second spot, earning $9.3 million during the weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to $88.8 million. The sci-fi horror film continues to captivate audiences with its storyline directed by Fede Álvarez.

Continuing its streak, “It Ends With Us” secured the third spot for the third consecutive weekend, raking in just over $7.4 million, slightly ahead of “Reagan.” The Sony film featuring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni is expected to reach a domestic total of $136 million after this weekend.

Surprisingly, “Twisters” landed in the fifth spot, earning $7.2 million in its seventh week in theaters. The standalone sequel to the 1996 hit “Twister” is still attracting audiences with the performances of Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Two new releases, “Afraid” and “1992,” made modest debuts over the weekend. The horror-thriller “Afraid,” featuring an AI villain, brought in $3.7 million, while “1992,” focusing on the tumultuous events in Los Angeles during that year, earned a meager $1.4 million. “Afraid” stars John Cho and Katherine Waterston, while “1992” features Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood, and Ray Liotta.

On the lower end of the box office rankings, “Slingshot,” a new sci-fi film starring Laurence Fishburne and Casey Affleck, opened with $485,282 across 845 screens. Distributor Bleecker Street projects the movie will reach $572,763 cumulatively after the holiday weekend, adding to the mix of diverse films in theaters as the summer movie season draws to a close.
