Avery Johnson led Kansas State to a 41-6 victory over UT Martin with two touchdown passes in the season opener. The Wildcats displayed a strong performance from all aspects of the game, particularly on defense, holding UT Martin to just 134 total yards with 4 sacks, including 1 1/2 by Tobi Osunsanmi.
In the first quarter, Johnson connected with tight end Brayden Loftin for a 23-yard touchdown, setting the tone for the Wildcats. Johnson completed 14 of 21 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, along with 37 rushing yards on three carries. DJ Giddens contributed 124 rushing yards on 13 carries, averaging 9.5 yards per attempt.
Kansas State’s special teams also shined when Ty Bowman blocked a punt, leading to a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Although UT Martin managed a couple of field goals, the Wildcats’ defense limited big plays and kept the Skyhawks out of the end zone for most of the game.
Notably, the Wildcats intercepted a pass when Young stared down his receiver, showcasing an opportunistic defense. UT Martin struggled to establish a rushing attack, gaining only 36 yards on 38 carries.
Following the win, Kansas State looks ahead to facing Tulane on September 7, while UT Martin will travel to play Southeast Missouri State University on the same day. Despite the victory, it is unlikely to significantly impact the Wildcats’ standing in the polls.
