Denmark’s centrist government recently announced plans to establish three new ministries, including one dedicated to emergency preparedness. The government also aims to appoint a minister for European Union affairs ahead of Denmark’s upcoming EU presidency in 2025. This restructuring aligns Denmark with Sweden, which also has ministries overseeing emergencies and preparedness for climate change and cyber threats. Additionally, a third new ministry will focus on implementing and coordinating Denmark’s green policies.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed hope that the establishment of the new green policy ministry would serve as an inspiration to other countries. Denmark has set ambitious targets of achieving 70% emissions reductions by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Specific details about the ministries, including potential redundancies among the existing 23 ministries, will be disclosed when the government is formally presented to King Frederik X.
In another development, 49-year-old Dan Jørgensen has been nominated by Frederiksen as Denmark’s candidate for the new commissioner to the European Union. Jørgensen, currently serving as Denmark’s climate minister and a former member of the European Parliament, will undergo scrutiny by the 720-member European assembly before assuming the role. Mette Frederiksen, 46, leads the Social Democratic Party and has been the Prime Minister of Denmark since 2019. She heads the coalition government comprising her center-left Social Democrats, the center-right Liberal Party, and the newly formed centrist Moderate party.
