A 5-year-old boy tragically died in Santaquin, Utah, after accidentally shooting himself with a 9 mm handgun found in his parents’ bedroom. The incident occurred while the boy’s parents and possibly one of his siblings were in the home but not in the room with him. Lt. Mike Wall of the Santaquin Police Department confirmed the details of the incident.

Authorities have ruled out foul play and are not pursuing charges against the parents at this time. The security measures taken with the firearm remain undisclosed, and a thorough investigation, including input from the medical examiner, is expected to span several months. The identities of those involved have not been released by the police.

Upon hearing the gunshot, the father rushed into the room and attempted CPR, but unfortunately, the boy succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Lt. Wall expressed the devastating impact on the family and the community, emphasizing the swiftness and unpredictability of accidents.

Santaquin, a close-knit community of approximately 14,000 residents located 60 miles south of Salt Lake City, has been deeply affected by the tragedy but has shown strong support for the grieving family.
