The Cleveland Browns have made a trade with the Washington Commanders, sending kicker Cade York to Washington in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick, according to a source familiar with the transaction. York rejoined the Browns this offseason after being released by the team following the preseason last year. The trade involves a 2025 selection going to Washington, with neither team officially announcing the deal yet.
York had been handling kicking duties for Cleveland during the preseason while Dustin Hopkins was recovering from a hamstring injury. He showcased his skills by making a 55-yard field goal in the preseason opener against Green Bay and a 33-yarder in the game against Minnesota.
At 23 years old, York spoke about the positive changes he made during the offseason, attributing it to finding faith after experiencing challenges in his career. The Browns initially drafted York as the No. 124 overall pick in 2022 based on his impressive performance, including a game-winning 58-yard kick against Carolina. Despite a solid rookie season, he faced struggles in last year’s preseason games, leading to his release by the Browns.
Following York’s departure, the Browns acquired Dustin Hopkins in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers. Hopkins, 33, had a successful season, converting 33 of 36 field goals, including all eight attempts from 50 yards or more. However, Hopkins sustained an injury during a kickoff return, causing him to miss Cleveland’s wild-card game in Houston.
