Arizona Diamondbacks’ standout player Ketel Marte exacerbated his sprained left ankle during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. Marte had been out of the starting lineup due to the injury but made an appearance as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning, only to go down after a check-swing, needing help to leave the field.
Manager Torey Lovullo provided limited updates after the game, stating Marte was being evaluated further and highlighting the power Marte exerts on his ankle when playing due to his physical strength.
In addition to Marte’s injury, the Diamondbacks are also dealing with first baseman Christian Walker’s strained left oblique and catcher Gabriel Moreno’s strained left adductor, both players currently on the injured list.
Despite the setbacks, the Diamondbacks remain in contention for an NL wild card spot after a strong performance since July, with a record of 28-13.
The sweep by the Rays marked the Diamondbacks’ first three-game losing streak since late June.
