Chad Kelly has been reinstated by the Canadian Football League and has returned to the Toronto Argonauts. He was suspended in May for violating the CFL’s gender-based violence policy, which resulted in him missing two exhibition games and the first nine regular-season games. The league reinstated Kelly with a last-chance agreement stipulating ongoing conditions that remain confidential but emphasize his commitment to upholding league standards.
The suspension was a consequence of an independent investigation into a lawsuit filed against Kelly and the Argos by a former strength-and-conditioning coach, which alleged sexual harassment and wrongful dismissal. The lawsuit was settled in June through mediation. Argos general manager Mike Clemons expressed that Kelly had taken accountability for his actions and highlighted the ongoing work required to strengthen the team culture with Kelly’s return.
During his suspension, Kelly had to undergo assessments by an independent expert and attend counseling sessions led by a gender-based violence specialist. These requirements had to be completed satisfactorily for the CFL to consider reinstatement, and the league retained the right to modify his discipline as necessary. The CFL reviewed Kelly’s psychological assessment and held discussions before making the decision to reinstate him.
Kelly, who had not played with Toronto since last year’s East Division final, issued an apology for his actions and their impact. He expressed commitment to personal growth and improvement. Upon his return, Kelly participated in practice, and the Argos’ coach plans to increase his workload gradually. With a game against Saskatchewan approaching, the team is considering Kelly’s readiness and potential role in the upcoming match.
Kelly’s football journey includes playing at various colleges and being the last pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Leading Toronto to a successful record last season, he aims to contribute positively to the team following his reinstatement.
