Florida primary to primarily spotlight state and local races alongside US Senate race

In the upcoming Florida primary, the focus will mainly be on local races, as the only statewide race on the ballot is for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Rick Scott. Scott is expected to win the primary easily over two lesser-known candidates. On the Democratic side, former U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is the leading candidate, backed by party leaders and having raised $12 million for the race. She faces competition from Navy veteran and businessman Stanley Campbell, Army veteran and businessman Rod Joseph, and former state representative Brian Rush.

In the congressional races, most incumbents running for re-election in Florida are expected to be safe in the primary. One open seat currently held by Republican Bill Posey is attracting attention, with former Senate President Mike Haridopolos entering the race. U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is seeking a fifth term and has garnered attention due to attacks from former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s political committee.

In state and local races, Florida Democrats have candidates for all House and Senate seats for the first time ever. However, Republicans hold a supermajority in both chambers and are likely to maintain their dominance. School board races are also drawing focus, with Governor Ron DeSantis endorsing candidates to counter what he perceives as “woke” ideology in public schools.

As of the voter deadline, Republicans outnumbered Democrats in voter registration. Early voting numbers indicate a low overall primary turnout, with Republicans casting more ballots than Democrats. The primary election in Florida is expected to be relatively calm compared to the recent presidential election.
