Connor Stalions, the former low-level recruiting staffer at Michigan involved in a sign-stealing scandal, is now coaching the defense at a Detroit high school. According to The Detroit News, Stalions is working as the defensive coordinator at Mumford High School. Stalions was accused of orchestrating an advanced scouting operation at Michigan, sending individuals to games of future opponents to secretly record signals for sign-stealing, which violates NCAA rules.
Michigan is expected to receive a notice of allegations from the NCAA regarding the scandal. However, resolving the matter may take several months. Despite the controversy, former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who transitioned to the NFL after winning a national title with the Wolverines, has denied any knowledge of Stalions’ actions.
Stalions has not publicly commented on the situation since leaving Michigan in November. He declined to discuss his role at Mumford High School, a public school in northwestern Detroit with a 2-16 record since 2022. Mumford’s head coach, William McMichael, defended Stalions, emphasizing that the NCAA issue is separate from their collaboration. McMichael praised Stalions for his dedication and the positive impact he has on the team.
McMichael revealed that he first encountered Stalions during Michigan’s recruitment of his son. He believes that Stalions can help prepare high school players for college by teaching them college-level terminology, practice routines, and film analysis methods. This exposure aims to provide students with an advantage as they aim to further their athletic endeavors beyond high school.
