Ex-Eagles Coordinators Reconnect as Head Coaches in Cardinals-Colts Joint Practices

Jonathan Gannon recognized Shane Steichen’s potential to become an NFL head coach when they both worked on the Philadelphia Eagles staff in 2021. Gannon was impressed with Steichen’s communication skills and teaching abilities, noting that he had the ‘it’ factor. The two coordinators, who played a crucial role in leading the Eagles to the 2022 NFC championship, have now been reunited as head coaches of the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts, respectively.

Gannon and Steichen, along with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, formed a formidable team during their time in Philadelphia. Before joining the Eagles, Sirianni and Steichen had worked together as offensive assistants for the Chargers, with Sirianni eventually moving on to become the Colts offensive coordinator and Steichen becoming the Chargers coordinator.

Their successful tenure with the Eagles, which included a playoff appearance and securing the NFC’s top seed, quickly made Gannon and Steichen highly sought-after head coaching candidates. Both coaches left the Eagles to pursue their dreams of leading their own teams.

Although neither Gannon nor Steichen made the playoffs last season and are not favorites to win their divisions this season, they are focused on developing their teams. They are working on improving their receiving groups, building up their defenses, and supporting their franchise quarterbacks who have had injury concerns.

Gannon and Steichen recently held joint practices at Grand Park Sports Campus in suburban Indianapolis, demonstrating mutual respect and a commitment to professionalism. Despite the intensity on the field, they also found time to share moments off the field. Steichen even organized a dinner for the Cardinals coaching staff upon their arrival in Westfield, Indiana, showcasing his meticulous planning style.

The coaches’ dedication to their craft and their emphasis on collaboration and preparation were evident throughout the joint practices, which were conducted without any major incidents. Gannon and Steichen’s reunion showcased their shared coaching philosophy and commitment to excellence as they prepared their teams for the upcoming season.
