Policeman set to appear in court for alleged murder of pregnant Black woman accused of shoplifting

On Wednesday, an Ohio police officer, Connor Grubb, is scheduled to appear in court to answer to charges related to the shooting of Ta’Kiya Young, a pregnant Black woman who was fatally shot after being accused of shoplifting. The charges against Grubb include murder, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault for the death of Young and her unborn daughter.

The tragic incident occurred on August 24, 2023, when Young, suspected of stealing alcohol, was approached by Grubb and another officer from the Blendon Township police. Young, seated in her car, was instructed to exit her vehicle by the officers. Instead, she moved her car forward towards Grubb, leading him to fire a single shot through her windshield, resulting in her death.

A Franklin County grand jury indicted Grubb on Tuesday following a review of bodycam footage which showed the events leading up to the shooting. The footage captured officers commanding Young to step out of her vehicle, her reluctance to comply, and the fatal shot fired by Grubb as the car inched forward.

The family’s attorney, Sean Walton, argued that Grubb escalated the situation by drawing his weapon unnecessarily during the encounter with Young. Conversely, Brian Steel, president of the union representing Blendon Township police, emphasized the split-second decision-making that officers face in high-pressure situations like these.

Critics, including some law enforcement organizations, point out that shooting at moving vehicles poses substantial risks, such as endangering bystanders from stray bullets or the driver losing control of the vehicle. Policies in various police departments, including Blendon Township, advise officers to avoid shooting at or from moving vehicles whenever possible, opting instead to move out of harm’s way.

Grubb, a full-time officer with the Blendon Township police force since 2019, has been on paid administrative leave since the tragic shooting. The case has once again brought attention to the complex and sensitive issues surrounding the use of force by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
