The race was incredibly close, and Russell had to wait anxiously for 15 seconds to confirm her win by just a narrow margin of .01 over French athlete Cyrena Samba-Mayela, who claimed the silver medal – the first medal of any color for France in the event.
Defending champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, representing Puerto Rico, finished closely behind, securing the bronze medal just .02 seconds after Samba-Mayela.
