American distance runner competes in Paris with thoughts of family in Eritrea since teenage migration

Weini Kelati has a poignant story that she carries with her as she competes as a long-distance runner. Originally from Eritrea, she decided not to return home after the 2014 world junior championships in Oregon. Instead, she sought asylum in the United States, where she ultimately earned U.S. citizenship.

Kelati’s upbringing in Eritrea included running, which was compulsory for children in school. Despite not initially loving running, she discovered her talent and began succeeding in races. This led her to represent Eritrea and eventually make the life-changing decision to stay in the U.S.

After settling in Virginia and excelling in high school, Kelati continued her running career at the University of New Mexico, where she achieved significant success. She recently qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning the 10,000 meters in Eugene, a place that holds special significance in her journey.

Kelati’s path to the Olympics has been filled with challenges, including being away from her family in Eritrea for a decade. Despite the difficulties, she remains determined to make her family proud, particularly her late father, who she believes would be delighted with her accomplishments.

Throughout her journey, Kelati has remained focused on her goals and overcoming obstacles. Her story is one of perseverance, sacrifice, and the pursuit of dreams, culminating in her representing the U.S. at the highest level of athletic competition.
