Former NBA player Royce White, a populist conservative, makes waves in Minnesota Senate primary

When Steve Bannon, a close ally of Donald Trump, surrendered at a federal prison in Connecticut, he requested the presence of an unconventional U.S. Senate candidate from Minnesota, Royce White, during the event. White, vying for the Republican nomination in the upcoming primary against Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, publicly supported Bannon, referring to him as “an American hero.” White’s association with Bannon and his friendship with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones have raised eyebrows, along with his controversial social media comments criticized for being misogynistic, homophobic, antisemitic, and profane.

White’s political journey, from a former basketball player whose NBA career was halted by mental health issues to a contender in the political arena, showcases the rising influence of the populist faction within the GOP that Bannon has been instrumental in developing. Despite White’s questionable past and legal troubles that include unpaid child support and dubious campaign expenditures, he managed to secure the Minnesota Republican Party’s endorsement in May with Bannon’s support.

White’s unexpected success in clinching the party’s endorsement has injected vigor into Minnesota’s otherwise anticipated uneventful political landscape. His endorsement by Bannon and his alignment with the pro-Trump “America First MAGA” movement were pivotal in swaying delegates at the state party’s convention. While White’s chances against Klobuchar in November are slim, his victory at the primary would defy the odds in a state known for electing unconventional candidates like Gov. Jesse Ventura and Sen. Al Franken.

Despite the attention garnered by White’s endorsement and subsequent scrutiny of his record, concerns have been raised over his financial transparency. Allegations of misusing campaign funds for personal expenses have surfaced, leading to a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission. White has denied any wrongdoing and asserted that he reimbursed his campaign for unauthorized expenses, including a controversial $1,200 expenditure at a strip club.

Amidst the unfolding political drama, Klobuchar’s formidable campaign war chest and legislative track record present a significant challenge for either Republican candidate. Her spokesperson emphasized the senator’s focus on legislative achievements, such as advocating for lower drug prices and supporting military veterans. One of White’s primary opponents, U.S. Navy veteran Joe Fraser, criticized White’s confrontational style and alliances, expressing a preference for a more moderate and mainstream approach.

The endorsement of White by Bannon and his alliance with figures like Alex Jones have stirred disapproval within the Republican Party. Critics argue that White’s unpreparedness and controversial affiliations may hinder his prospects in a race against Klobuchar, a seasoned politician with substantial financial backing. As the primary election approaches, the dynamics of the Senate race in Minnesota continue to evolve, reflecting the broader shifts within the state’s political landscape.
