The NFL has recently imposed fines of $200,000 each on the Giants and Lions due to multiple altercations that occurred during joint practices between the two teams this week. The league emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards fighting and unprofessional behavior during such practices in a memo sent to all clubs last month.
During the practices, there were several instances of scuffles that quickly escalated, involving players from both teams. Lions’ All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was engaged in two separate fights, one with safety Dane Belton and another with rookie cornerback Dru Phillips. Giants quarterback Daniel Jones found himself in the midst of one of the altercations when a Lions player landed on top of him following a play where Jones injured his hand on a Lions defender’s equipment.
The intensity of the clashes led to one of the Lions players, defensive back Emmanuel Moseley, sustaining an injury that has left him sidelined indefinitely. The following day, Giants rookie WR Malik Nabers was involved in a physical altercation with Lions safety Kerby Joseph.
Despite the confrontations during practice, the Giants and Lions are scheduled to face off in their preseason opener on Thursday night. This incident serves as a reminder of the league’s firm stance against unsportsmanlike conduct and the need for players to uphold professionalism and discipline both on and off the field.
