Charges Filed Against 4 Hotel Staff in Felony Murder of Black Man

Four employees of a Milwaukee hotel were charged with felony murder in connection to the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, as reported last Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint, the employees were accused of dragging Mitchell out of the Hyatt Hotel on June 30 after he entered a woman’s bathroom, holding him down for eight to nine minutes on his stomach. One of the employees mentioned that Mitchell had difficulty breathing and asked for help multiple times during the incident.

An autopsy revealed that Mitchell was morbidly obese and had consumed cocaine and methamphetamine. Family members and their attorneys had viewed surveillance footage from the hotel, which allegedly showed Mitchell being pursued by security guards inside the hotel before being dragged outside and assaulted.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, part of the legal team representing Mitchell’s family, referenced a video circulating on social media showing security guards kneeling on Mitchell’s back and neck. Concerns were raised about the lack of charges in relation to Mitchell’s death by Milwaukee authorities.

Aimbridge Hospitality, the hotel’s managing company, had previously announced the termination of several employees involved in the incident.
