Tropical storm Carlotta develops in the Pacific Ocean, heading away from Mexico

Hurricane Carlotta, a new tropical cyclone, has developed over the Pacific Ocean and is gaining strength while heading further away from Mexico. The National Hurricane Center in Miami reports that the hurricane’s maximum sustained winds have intensified to 80 mph (130 kmh) as it moves away from land. Although Carlotta is moving away from the coast, ocean swells produced by the storm could impact the west-central mainland of Mexico and the southern areas of Baja California. These swells are expected to create dangerous surf conditions and rip currents, posing a threat to beachgoers and marine activities over the weekend.
