Jessica Norton’s employment was suspended by the Broward County school board in a 5-4 vote due to violations of the state’s Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which prohibits transgender females from competing in girls’ high school sports. While facing suspension without pay, Norton must also be reassigned to a role with equal pay and responsibilities but can no longer work as a computer information specialist.
Despite the violation, the school board decided that termination would be too extreme for Norton, considering it was her first offense. Norton’s daughter, who was a part of the varsity volleyball team for two seasons, left the school following the incident, despite holding the positions of class president and homecoming princess. The Nortons are currently involved in a federal lawsuit challenging Florida’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors and laws prohibiting transgender individuals from participating in certain sports.
