Death of prisoner discovered at Mississippi correctional facility

An inmate was discovered deceased inside his cell at a Mississippi correctional facility located approximately 90 miles east of the state’s capital, as authorities reported on Friday. This event marks the third fatality at the East Mississippi Correctional facility in Meridian this month. Clarence Gillie, 59, was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday, as stated by Emily Lawhead, the spokesperson for Management and Training Corporation responsible for managing the facility. Efforts to resuscitate Gillie were made by the facility’s medical staff, which was followed by local emergency medical services confirming his passing. The circumstances surrounding Gillie’s death are currently being investigated, pending the results of an autopsy, although foul play is not suspected at this time. Lawhead deferred inquiries regarding Gillie’s incarceration to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. According to Grace Fisher, an MDOC representative, Gillie was serving a cumulative sentence of 65 years for charges including burglary in Coahoma County in 1987, escape in Sunflower County in 1988, and armed robbery in Bolivar County in 1989.
